In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
